The country music icon delivers the new track “Addicted to You.”
The premiere: “Addicted to You” is written by Kelly Lang and performed by T.G. Sheppard on his upcoming album, Midnight in Memphis.
About the artist: With more than 40 years on the music scene, Sheppard has had 14 No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, including “Devil in the Bottle” and “I Loved ’Em Every One.” He’s built a reputation as one of the most sought-after live performers in country music.
About the album: After 2015’s compilation Legendary Friends & Country Duets — featuring pairings with Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many more — Sheppard is going solo again. Midnight in Memphis will be Sheppard’s first solo country album in 22 years.
Recently, we caught up with the popular singer-songwriter to talk about the album and "Addicted to You."
Cowboys & Indians: Congrats on your upcoming album, Midnight in Memphis, which comes out September 20. What are you most excited about in terms of its release?
T.G. Sheppard: I’m most excited about the fact that it’s been 22 years since I’ve released a solo country album. I spent two years making this project, but you could say, it was actually 22 years in the making.
C&I: What do you hope your fans will get out of it?
Sheppard: What I want the fans to take away from this album is the fact that I am still very, very passionate about what I do, and hopefully, people will hear that and relate to the songs on the album.
C&I: How does this record differ from your early records?
Sheppard: This lineup of songs differs from my previous albums because the subject matter on most of the tracks is deeper than the songs I recorded back in the day.
C&I: What was the production process like?
Sheppard: The production process on this project was a luxury for me. I was afforded the opportunity to not be rushed and to be able to take my time and to make the changes that I felt needed to be made. Technology has advanced so much that you can make better albums now than you could years ago.
C&I: We have the privilege of getting to premiere the track “Addicted to You.” Tell us a little bit about the song.
Sheppard: The inspiration behind the song “Addicted to You” came about because I needed a little more energy in the album, so I asked my wife, singer-songwriter Kelly Lang, to write me something really upbeat. Let’s face it — everyone in life is addicted to something. The theme of being in love and addicted to a person worked for me, and after hearing what she had written, I was compelled to record it.
