Country-folk singer Will Stewart debuts his music video for “Sipsey,” exclusively with C&I.
A native of Alabama, singer-songwriter Will Stewart has come out with a new album, County Seat, that draws on his Deep South roots. Available now, it delivers pleasing, introspective folk rock.
The nostalgia-driven track “Sipsey” gives a roots-rock taste of Stewart’s past, replaying his childhood from an adult perspective.
“The title references a place in northwest Alabama called Sipsey Wilderness Preserve,” Stewart says. “I wanted to use that as a sort of visual and tangible anchor to otherwise-vague and impressionistic lyrics. I also just like the way it sounds.”
The music video for the track nicely captures Stewart’s evocation of youth.
“Overall the song is about trying to recapture the sense of awe, wonder, and abandon — and maybe innocence to a lesser degree — of young adulthood,” Stewart explains. “Coming to realize that things that were once inconsequential in youth are now the only things that matter. It’s a song about nostalgia, but I also hint in the song that nostalgia is basically just a mirage and not a healthy thing to do. Sipsey is just the object [and] place that sort of triggers these ghostly feelings.”
The video, captured on overexposed film, follows a young couple in love escaping the overbearingness of their parents and finding solace and peace in each other.
