Santa Fe 400 Treasure Collection celebrates the city's upcoming anniversary

The Spanish officially founded Santa Fe in 1610 on lands once inhabited by the Anasazi, and the City Different has since thrived on the convergence of cultures. To commemorate the city's upcoming anniversary, longtime Santa Fe jewelry artist Douglas Magnus has created his Santa Fe 400 Treasure Collection, which features handmade representations of Spanish 8 reales (better known as "pieces of eight") and bullion in sterling silver and 14kt gold. Some pieces are also accented with rare turquoise from the ancient Cerrillos mines. "I wanted a handmade look to celebrate Santa Fe's 400th anniversary," says Magnus. "The Spanish colonial coins were the perfect motif to represent New Mexico's long and fascinating history." Magnus calls the line "ever-evolving" with no two pieces the same. A variety of earring styles come in three sizes; some are turquoise-studded with beads dangling below. Pendants, necklaces, charm bracelets, and a large ingot-style cuff round out the collection. Enthusiasts include former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and legendary designer Manuel.
