School is in session this year at the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame's Cowgirl U, and this is one time when students can't wait to get to class.

New for 2009 is the Legendary Ranch Series created by the museum.

Cowgirl U program director Chad Isham says, "Ranches are where my roots are, and I feel strongly about sharing that experience in a way that also honors our cowgirl inductees."

The inaugural event was held in March at the Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas, and Tongue River Ranch in Paducah, Texas.

Hall of Fame honoree Anne W. Marion of the Four Sixes was profiled, and a group of 12 participants shared in the experience of a real working cattle and horse ranch while getting an inside look at some of the top breeding programs in the world for American Quarter Horses and beef cattle breeds.

"We try to choose ranches that have been in the same family for more than 100 years and that are still worked in the traditional way," Isham says.

Next up — the Kokernot o6 Ranch in Fort Davis, Texas, scheduled for October 2-4.

Hall of Fame honoree Hallie Stillwell, known as "Queen of the Big Bend," will be profiled and honored. Once again, enrollment will be limited to 12 participants.

Isham says, "We want to keep it more intimate."
